The science behind remotely navigating a safe route across a crevassed ice shelf

9 April 2021

Every year a team of Antarctica New Zealand experts traverse over 1000km across the Ross Ice Shelf, to support our Project 1 research at the Siple Coast.

This is no mean feat and travelling across the highly crevassed ice shelf takes careful planning, meticulous safety practices and some high-tech science!

Thanks to University of Canterbury, and Project 4 researcher Dr Dan Price’s use of TerraSAR-X satellite imagery, a safe route through this highly crevassed area can be mapped remotely.

This research capability has just been published in the journal Cold Regions Science and Technology, click here to read more.
