Ian is an aquatic ecologist with a research background in primary production in coastal and inland waters. His primary areas of expertise relate to photosynthetic ecology of sea ice algae, cyanobacteria-dominated mats, aquatic plants and seaweeds.

Within the Antarctic Science Platform he is undertaking research on the ecosystem consequences of changing quality and phenology of lake and sea ice, mediated through impacts on primary production pathways.
