Marine ecology and remote sensing

Earth Sciences New Zealand

Matt Pinkerton is a Principal Scientist at Earth Sciences NZ, based in Wellington. His research brings together satellite remote sensing of the ocean and ecosystem modelling to understand how environmental variability affects the structure and function of marine food-webs. He has a special interest in the role of middle trophic-level species including zooplankton and mesopelagic fishes, and in new observational technology. He has worked on the ecology and management of the Ross Sea region for nearly 20 years, including representing New Zealand at CCAMLR meetings and Southern Ocean bioregionalisation workshops.

In the Antarctic Science Platform, Matt Pinkerton is co-objective leader for Tiaki moana: Ecosystems investigating how climate variability/change, fishing and other anthropogenic effects are affecting the ecosystems of the Ross Sea region. Monitoring and evaluating the conservation value of the Ross Sea region Marine Protected Area will help to reduce threats to this unique region.
