Melissa Bowen is a physical oceanographer who studies ocean currents, temperatures and salinities over a range of scales, from estuaries to the ocean basins. In the Antarctic Science Platform she is investigating the outflow of dense water from the Ross Sea and the exchange of water at the shelf break through the troughs. These new observations are monitoring changes in the dense water leaving the Ross Sea, impacting the transport of oxygen and carbon into the global abyssal ocean, and providing new understanding about what controls the exchange through the troughs.
