Billy is a senior lecturer in environmental studies who focuses on building research partnerships with Māori and Indigenous communities toward supporting their mana motuhake in environmental kaupapa in their takiwā. With Australian qualifications in wildlife biology and evolutionary ecology, Billy has expanded his training after PhD to include postgraduate qualifications in International Relations and in Māori and Indigenous Studies.
From his base in Whanganui, Billy will work to stimulate engagement of Māori communities in the science of Antarctic ice melt and engage Antarctic scientists to explore how the science practice can better engage with Māori and other Indigenous knowledge traditions. Strong Indigenous engagement in Antarctic discourses and research is important for shaping hopeful and resilient Antarctic futures.
