François (Frankie) Thoral

PhD

Marine Ecologist

University of Waikato

Early Career Researcher

Dr François (Frankie, he/him) Thoral is a marine ecologist with a research background in ecology, marine optics, remote sensing and physiology. François’ research investigates the consequences of extreme events for marine ecosystems and in a multi-stressor context, such as changes in water clarity, coastal darkening, marine darkwaves, and increasing marine heatwaves.

In the Antarctic Science Platform, François is contributing expertise in satellite remote sensing, spectral unmixing, and biophysical models to better understand how primary productivity and carbon flux from sea ice, pelagic, and benthic autotrophic communities will change in the face of extreme events and climate change.
