Laura De Santis is a Senior Researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, Trieste, Italy. She obtained her PhD degree from the University of Parma (Italy) in 1995.
Her research focuses on the evolution of polar continental margins using marine geophysical data, bathymetric maps and sediment cores to investigate glacial environments, both at the present time and in the past (over millennia and millions of years). These observations are needed to reconstruct the response of the cryosphere to past climate change and to predict future scenarios.
Laura has taken part in ten Antarctic cruises (leading or co-leading five of them) within projects funded by the Italian Antarctic Research Programme, the International Ocean Discovery Programme, the Australian Research Council and the US National Science Foundation.
She is:
• A member of the Science Evaluation Panel of the International Ocean Drilling Programme
• Italian chief representative and secretariat of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Geoscience Scientific Group
• A former member of the Italian Antarctic Programme strategic board (2008–2015)
• An adjunct professor at the University of Trieste, teaching Marine Geology
