Associate Professor Shelley MacDonell is a cold regions hydrologist who focuses on the impact of climate change on catchment dynamics. She uses a combination of field, laboratory and numerical methods to understand the response of snow and ice to environmental change and the impact on downstream hydrology. She works both within ice-free catchments (e.g. McMurdo Dry Valleys) and on ice shelves.
In the Antarctic Science Platform, Shelley will examine the impacts of extreme events and climate change on ice melt and the consequences for terrestrial ice and downstream hydrology. This work will connect with ecosystems research to help improve the management of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas within the Ross Sea Region. Shelley is the co-lead of Objective 1 of Tiaki Whenua.
