Dr. Svenja Halfter works on zooplankton and krill ecology and biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean, in particularly the Ross Sea. Their work focuses on pelagic biodiversity and food webs, zooplankton-mediated carbon flow, ecological connectivity between sea ice and water column, and the impact of climate change on the pelagic ecosystem. They analyse data from established time-series, for example, the Continuous Plankton Recorder, and develop novel methods to study the lower and mid-trophic levels in the Ross Sea region.
In the Antarctic Science Platform, Svenja will investigate the diversity, distribution, and variability of the zooplankton community of the Ross Sea and the Southern Ocean, changes in plankton-mediated carbon flux, and its large-scale response to changes in the environment.
